The main objective for the Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) is to continue to grow in its importance as a geosciences expert center, and to do this demands access to state of the art instrumentation and methods developed for that instrumentation, allowing GTK researchers new avenues for research at the cutting edge of their respective fields. Ore deposit studies, development of innovative exploration methods, environmental studies and assessment of human impact on the planet are examples of research fields that require new types of data, pushing the limits in terms of precision, detection limits and electron imaging down to the nano-scale. GTK now has access to this type of instrumentation through the joint research facility Suomen Geotieteiden Tutkimuslaboratorio (SGL). All of this instrumentation is highly versatile, thus allowing combining information on mineral and other inorganic phase compositions, trace elements, isotopes and nanoparticles, and providing the means for multi-faceted, innovative studies impossible to do previously.

This project will be centred on the development of further new methods for the three SGL instruments: Multicollector Inductively Coupled Mass Spectrometer (MC-ICPMS), Single Collector ICPMS, Field Emission Scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM).
