Preliminary Study Reveals Broader Lithium Potential in Finland’s Bedrock

The Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) has published a new report examining Finland’s bedrock lithium potential more extensively than before. The results indicate that geological conditions associated with lithium pegmatites occur across wider areas than previously expected. Several regions yielded lithium-prospective samples and elevated concentrations of accompanying elements, such as tin and EU-critical elements niobium and tantalum.

The study utilised archival material, nationwide till datasets and modern analytical methods, while field visits confirmed key observations.

The findings show that geological conditions linked to lithium pegmatites are more widespread than anticipated. Multiple areas produced lithium-prospective samples and elevated levels of associated elements, including tin and EU-critical metals niobium and tantalum.

Conducted during 2024–2025, the study was preliminary in nature. The results confirm that further research is needed to fully assess Finland’s lithium occurrences. At the same time, information on areas lacking potential helps to target exploration more efficiently.

The report provides an information package on Finland’s lithium potential and exploration methods that make use of digital tools and archival data. The study was carried out as part of GTK’s self-funded STRAMIN project.
