Reports on Five Areas Published in the Battery Mineral Project

The battery mineral project started at the Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) in 2019 to assess potential deposits of the metals and minerals required in battery production in Finland. As part of the project, GTK published five target reports from past investigations on 14 December 2023.

Reporting is done in the format required by the Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency (Tukes). The studies have provided information on the mineral potential of the areas concerning copper, rare earth elements (REE), platinum group minerals (PGE), and gold. Some of the sites have been published previously as GTK work reports.

GTK often conducts surveys in areas that also attract private mineral exploration companies. To ensure uninterrupted investigations for all parties and GTK’s impartiality, GTK has applied for a mineral exploration permit for some of the areas in accordance with the Mining Act. GTK will submit a discontinuation notification to Tukes regarding the Kedonojankulma and Mäkärä mineral exploration applications on 29 December 2023 at 8 am.

The goal of GTK’s statutory operations is to create and maintain high-quality international-level geological information and expertise, and to produce innovation for society and the business sector. Through its activities, the research organisation promotes the competitiveness of business life and regions and supports the planning and execution of societal policy. GTK is an impartial non-profit expert organisation that operates independently in relation to its customers.
