The National Drill Core Archive in Loppi Celebrates Its 50th Anniversary – Construction of New Facilities Has Started
The National Drill Core Archive of the Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) has been operating in Loppi since 1974. The archive is being renewed by increasing storage capacity.

The National Drill Core Archive receives drill cores – i.e. rock samples – that are created during ore prospecting, mining activity and rock tunnelling. In particular, the archive serves the purposes of ore prospecting, the mining industry and bedrock research.
Construction of the new facilities has started, and the work has progressed according to schedule. Two new buildings will be built and one old warehouse will be dismantled during the renewal process. At the same time, space utilisation will be optimised, ensuring that facilities are safe to use and meet the needs of customers.
“By renewing facilities, we ensure that we have the capacity to receive samples now and in the future. The archives carry out scientifically and economically significant work to ensure the long-term success of society and businesses,” says Asko Käpyaho, Head of the Mineral Economy Solutions unit.
The larger warehouse will be completed at the end of 2024. The second new warehouse will be completed in late autumn 2025.
“The new facilities allow us to ensure the development and continuation of GTK’s operations in Loppi. Thanks to close and good cooperation, the construction phase has been reached as planned,” says Sonja Nybonn, Account Manager at Senate Properties.
