GTK basic licence for data and products
Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) provides rights to use the data and products under its ownership. GTK-granted licences include:
• Basic License (this license)
• Open License (compatible with CC Attribution 4.0 International)
• Licence for academic thesis
• Data Material cooperation licence
This Basic License 1.2 is valid from 1 December 2025. The user must provide a copy of the licence or its link.

Terms and conditions for the use of products and materials and related services (Basic licence)
General
Geological Survey of Finland (“GTK”, “Licensor”) or its contractual partners constitute the producer of products and data materials (“Materials”) and related services and the owner or holder of copyrights, database protection and other intellectual property rights. “User” refers to a person or entity (“Organization”) that uses Material and related services under this License and that has been granted such rights.
If a fee is charged for use of the Material, the licence will apply once the fee has been paid as per agreement.
Used Material, its parts or its derivatives must include a reference to its source and the year of the Material revision:

or a mention of edits to the Material:
- [Name of specified data product/Material], edited © Geological Survey of Finland [year]
The Material is to be labelled either as a) Material is presented as-is, or b) Material is edited.
Unless otherwise agreed in writing, the following terms apply to use of the Materials.
This is a global, irrevocable, coexistent, and limited license that grants the User access to the Material or service specified in the header, either for personal use or internal use within their Organization, to:
- copy,
- edit and utilise,
- combine with other products and material,
- distribute within the Organization (requires an Organization-level license), and
- use as part of an internal application or service within the Organization.
Distribution rights are not included in licences granted for individuals for personal use only. Personal licences may not be used as part of an application or service for any other than personal use. By receiving Material or using services, the User accepts the terms and conditions of this License.
The API or equivalent covered by this GTK-provided licence may be linked to internal Organization services provided that the licence has not been granted for personal use only.
The licence requires a fee or no fee as agreed separately. The licence is valid for 10 years from the date that the Material is downloaded or received unless agreed otherwise. Transfer of the licence requires written permission from GTK. Licence is non-exclusive.
Use of Material on behalf of another party (e.g. when partnering or subcontracting for a commission) requires a separate permission from GTK.
Partner of the licenced User (“Joint Venture”) may be granted right to use GTK Material related to the joint research subject under GTK-provided conditions in force at that time as agreed separately in writing.
Permitted use
Use of Material, e.g. reclassification or use as the basis for analyses or other derivatives, that includes its modification, editing, reproduction, copying, printing or scanning, is permitted.
Any presentations of the Material must include its source. Any other use, than described above, either as-is or as part of a product in maps, publications, books, brochures, advertisements, multimedia or any other format without prior permission from GTK is prohibited.
However, use of graphics and other material derived from the Material for documents intended for the authorities or for academic publications and education is allowed without separate permission, provided that the source is cited.
Publication of minor material extracts (e.g. graphics) with reference in static bulletins, such as stock exchange bulletins or geological reports, is permitted.
Use for news is permitted with reference.
When Material is used as part of an internal service within an Organization where usage of the Material is inseparable from a system, e.g. when the Material is processed in machine learning or language model methods, the Material and its licence must be mentioned as part of the service description.
Use of Material as part of commercial or other public services, including technologies based on language models and other artificial intelligence-related technologies, is prohibited.
User responsibilities and liabilities
When using Material and derived products, the User and Organization must:
- mention the GTK license for the Material as detailed in the General section;
- present a copy of this license or its link, or;
- state in the description that GTK Material is included in the background material, for example in services that leverage a language model.
This licence agreement does not create a cooperation or business relationship between the User and GTK. When using Material, the User is not allowed to indicate that GTK supports or promotes the given use case of the Material. When granting publication rights, GTK has the right to demand mentioning that GTK is not responsible for further use of the Material or any consequences of such use.
The User is liable for ensuring compliance with these terms, and obligated to ensure adequate technical and physical means of protection when storing Material, and protects Material from any use that violates these terms. The User has no right to transfer the agreement or parts of the agreement to third parties without prior written permission from GTK.
GTK is entitled to compensation damages resulting from neglection or violation of these terms.
If GTK suffers damages resulting from breach of agreement, the Material recipient is obligated to compensate in full any direct or indirect costs or damages resulting from neglection or violation of the agreement. This provision does not limit the legal remedies available to the parties of the agreement under the applicable law.
Restrictions
The Material user must comply with all Finnish and EU export restrictions as well as legislation pertaining to national security.
Use of Material requires that the user is not subject to sanctions imposed by the European Union or the United Nations. Upon discovery that the person or Organization to whom the licence is granted was under such sanctions when receiving Material, GTK may immediately revoke their Licence.
GTK responsibilities and liabilities
GTK ensures that it has the right to grant access rights.
The Material has been licensed as-is. GTK is not liable for any errors in the Material or Service or for any direct or indirect damage caused by the use of the Material or Service. GTK provides no guarantee that the Material or the information within is accurate or up to date.
GTK provides no guarantee for continuous availability of Material or the service, and GTK may terminate the distribution of Material or the service without notice. The User is not entitled for Material updates while the Licence is valid.
Provided Material does not include personal data, or any included personal data has been made anonymous as applicable to research data.
Applicable law
This licence is governed by Finnish law.
Changes to this license
GTK may change the licence terms for distributed Material at any time or apply different licence terms to the Material. However, the terms of this Licence continue to apply to Materials that were used before changes to the Licence.
