Geological Survey of Finland Hires Nine Interns for Summer 2026

The Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) once again opens its doors to future experts as the summer internship application period begins. The application period runs from 23 February to 11 March 2026.

For summer 2026, GTK is recruiting a total of nine interns for a wide range of tasks. The internships offer students the opportunity to work in hands-on research and development assignments in fieldwork, laboratory environments, and office settings. Depending on the position, tasks may include geophysical field measurements, marine geology, environmental and geochemical research, development of geographic information systems, mineral processing technology, and work related to public sample services. An internship position is also available within GTK’s legal services.

Three internship positions are available in English and can be applied for and completed fully in English. The remaining positions require fluent Finnish.

The internship provides an opportunity to apply academic studies in practice and gain valuable experience in an expert organization.

“GTK’s internships offer a genuine opportunity to participate in research and development work. Interns are part of the work community, and their contribution is important to us,” says HR Planner Apollonia Kinnunen, who coordinates the internships.

GTK invests in the guidance and onboarding of interns. The goal is to ensure that the internship supports the student’s professional development and provides a realistic picture of expert work in a governmental research institute.

“The feedback we receive year after year has been extremely positive. Interns feel warmly welcomed and find their tasks suitably challenging and meaningful,” Kinnunen says, continuing:

“For many, the internship is also the first step toward a career at GTK. GTK employs many experts who originally began their careers as university interns.”

Most internships take place between June and August, although a few positions begin as early as May. The application period lasts two and a half weeks, from Monday 23 February to Wednesday 11 March.
