Jane and Aatos Erkko Foundation Grants Funding for the ML-Mining Project
The Jane and Aatos Erkko Foundation has granted a donation for Muhammad Muniruzzaman, Senior Scientist at the Geological Survey of Finland (GTK).
Muhammad Muniruzzaman has been granted a 560 000 € donation by the Jane and Aatos Erkko Foundation for his study ML-Mining: Machine Learning surrogate modelling for risk assessment and water quality prediction at Mining sites. Muniruzzaman works in the Water Management Solutions Unit at GTK.
Mining waste management represents one of the biggest environmental and socio-economic concerns for mine operators, governments and citizens due to the chemical reactivity of such waste and the potential for releasing toxic drainage enriched in metal(loid)s and acidity with the severe risk of damaging aquatic ecosystems in the vicinity of mining activity. The ML-Mining project proposes a machine learning based surrogate modelling approach to predict and control such environmental pollution, its impact on water quality, and to advance the field towards sustainable mine waste management.
“I am really excited about the research that we will perform within this project. This involves basic research in computational method development with a clear focus on practical applications. The research outcome can be highly beneficial for the environmental risk assessment purposes in the context of mining applications”, says Muniruzzaman.
The project will be executed within a duration of four years. The donation granted by the JAES Foundation will support a postdoctoral and a doctoral researcher working in the project.
The Jane and Aatos Erkko Foundation supports high-level, international scientific research as well as arts and culture. In the board meeting in May the foundation granted almost 9,3 million euros of donations for 11 different projects.
