Suspected Neglect of Occupational Safety Obligations at GTK Mintec

The prosecutor has brought charges related to a suspected occupational safety offence that occurred in May 2024 at GTK Mintec’s pilot plant in Outokumpu.

The accident caused a temporary impairment to an employee due to noise exposure. The GTK Mintec pilot plant conducts research on mineral processing and the utilisation of circular economy materials.

Following the incident, GTK implemented the necessary measures to improve safety and submitted a report on these measures to the Regional State Administrative Agency, which approved it in August 2024.

The police and the prosecutor investigated the case during the winter of 2026. GTK has sought to assist the investigation in every possible way. The case will be heard in the North Karelia District Court in September.

“We take occupational safety very seriously. The development of workplace safety is continuous at GTK. Safety deviations are reported so that they can be investigated and the necessary corrective measures taken,” says Saku Vuori, Acting Director General of GTK.

The renewal of the GTK Mintec pilot plant is currently being planned, and the new facility is intended to open in 2029. New laboratory and office facilities for GTK Mintec were completed in 2024. The development of occupational safety has played a central role in the design of the new premises.
