UpDeep project created solutions for greenfield exploration with soil and plant samples

Upscaling deep buried geochemical exploration techniques into European business – UpDeep project (2017-2020) is an EIT Raw Materials funded project developing a low environmental impact surface geochemical exploration service. The UpDeep surface geochemical concept aids exploration industry to identify and prioritize potential exploration targets by reducing time and cost while improving reliability in exploration target detection. The surface geochemical exploration is based on analysing trace amounts of metals or other elements and soil hydrocarbons in plants and soil horizons to discover blind mineralisation under sediment cover. Surface geochemistry increases sensitivity in exploration by providing a versatile toolset producing very local map patterns of anomalies.

As a result of the UpDeep project Scandinavian GeoPool launches a surface geochemical consulting service. The service is designed to be flexible and modular to serve customers with various requirements and in-house knowhow. The service relies on a web based software solution, called GEM web tool, enhancing information exchange with customer exploration companies. Additionally, surface geochemical reference materials can be purchased off the self or tailor made by request. Exploratory data analysis and compositional data analysis methods were developed to enhance sometimes weak and noisy anomaly patterns. The sampling campaigns conducted on top of known mineralisations in France, Greeland and Finland indicated these methods to be suitable for exploration of gold, silver, cobalt, copper, antimony, zink and led. These surface geochemical data can be viewed through an UpDeep Online Statistics Tool.

The consortium leader was Geological Survey of Finland (GTK). The consortium consisted of Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland (GEUS), French Geological Survey (BRGM), Vienna Technical University (TUWien), Scandinavian GeoPool, VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland, Spinverse and LTU Business. This activity received funding from the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), a body of the European Union, under the Horizon 2020, the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation.
