Work in the Field or at the Office – Internships for Summer 2025 Are Open for Applications

The Geological Survey of Finland GTK offers internships this summer for higher education students mainly in geo and environmental fields. The application period is ongoing and will last until 17.2.2025.

GTK’s summer internships offer higher education students an opportunity to participate in practical projects and research. In positions mainly aimed at geo and environmental students, interns get to work on research projects in the field, laboratories and offices.

This year, GTK offers 13 internships in geophysics, enrichment technology, marine and soil geology, groundwater and mining environments, drill core archives, layman’s sample practice and geoscience information. In addition, there is an internship for a software engineer who participates in the development of GTK’s online services and for a law student who gets to familiarise themselves with the organisation’s legal affairs. The geophysics and petrophysics internships can be done in English.

GTK offers its interns expert guidance and diverse tasks that support professional development. GTK’s culture and values emphasise the importance of work and the appreciation, curiosity and striving for good of each employee. 91% of GTK people are from Finland, and 9% come from outside of Finland.

Excellent feedback year after year

GTK collects feedback from the interns every year. Feedback is requested on the diversity and level of difficulty of the tasks as well as on the work community, among other things.

“We are proud to say that the feedback is very good year after year. The interns have felt that they are welcomed in our work community. They have received sufficient orientation and necessary support for their tasks. The tasks have met expectations, and their quantity and quality have been appropriate,” says Apollonia Kinnunen, HR Planner coordinating the internship.

According to Kinnunen, the successful internship experience is also reflected in the fact that interns who have been at GTK want to apply for a job again.

“Many GTK employees have started their careers through summer internships, so interns are potential future employees. Practical training may arouse interest in different areas of geology and influence where students direct their studies,’ says Kinnunen.

How to apply and more information

Students can apply for internships between 27.1.–17.2.2025.

All open internships (in English) and application instructions can be found on the Summer Internship page.
