Zambia and Finland Strengthen Partnership in Water Development and Geological Research and Innovations

The Ministry of Water Development and Sanitation of Zambia and the Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that establishes a partnership focused on hydrogeology, managed aquifer recharge and water resources management. GTK has earlier signed an MoU that establishes partnership in geological research and innovations with Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development of Zambia.

Ten people are standing in a row indoors in an office. In the background, there is a bookshelf, a poster, and a glass wall.

The MoU around water development aims to achieve cooperation in water resource mapping, research for water supply and water diplomacy. Moreover, the aim is to enhance manage aquifer recharge research and applications in Zambia and transboundary aquifers.

The agreed actions in MoU will help decision-making by providing information and research results. Also, the capacity building for groundwater modelling is an integral part of the future water management and availability. Most of the Commercial Water Utilities in Zambia use groundwater sources to supplement surface water resources. The MoU also includes technical assistance in the research for water supply in the cities.

“The lack of water is one of the most serious consequences of climate change, requiring various actions to adapt. As a result of our long-term cooperation, GTK is pleased to offer scientific expertise to help solve questions related to water resources and availability,” says Kimmo Tiilikainen, Director General, GTK.

In autumn 2024 another MoU was signed between GTK and the Ministry of Mines and Minerals Development of Zambia. Through this partnership, Zambia and Finland seek to continue exploring opportunities for cooperation in geological research and innovations. One project is already ongoing to enhance quality control and assurance of Zambia’s nationwide high-resolution geophysical aerial survey.

GTK is also participating in the PanAfGeo+ project in Zambia, where GTK plays a strong role as an expert in raw materials and leads the work package on groundwater research.

“We welcome GTK’s participation in the PanAfGeo+ project in Zambia, where Finland’s expertise in raw materials and groundwater research will play a pivotal role in advancing Zambia’s geological and water resource knowledge. This collaboration reinforces the significance of science-driven policymaking and will help strengthen Zambia’s resilience to water-related challenges,” emphasizes Collings Nzovu, Minister for Water Development and Sanitation of Zambia.
