OmaKivi is a mobile app service for saving boulder and bedrock observations digitally. The OmaKivi service is for anyone interested in rocks and minerals, from occasional rock hobbyists to more active and enthusiastic amateur geologists. Observations can be saved for all locations in Finland.
If your observation concerns an ore, industrial, or gemstone rock, you can submit it as a layman’s sample to the Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) for analysis via the OmaKivi service. Please notice that meteorites are excluded from the layman’s sample observations. Observations sent via the OmaKivi service are automatically entered in the national rock sample competition.

Use of the service and having samples analysed are free of charge. However, if you want to send samples to be analysed as a layman’s sample, you must create a user account in the app first (register as user). Users can register via the mobile application.
Note: Your email program may classify the registration-related message as spam (in Gmail, it may appear under the Promotions tab). Please remember to check there as well.
The OmaKivi can be used by downloading a mobile application from the App Store OmaKivi or Google Play Store OmaKivi.
OmaKivi mobile app is easy to use. Then you can use OmaKivi wherever you are, as long as you have your smart phone with you. Thus, collecting your rock observations is easy with the help of your phone’s built-in camera and GPS capabilities.
To use the mobile version of the OmaKivi service, you need a smartphone and an internet connection. If you wish to register for the service, you will also need an email address.
You can explore the OmaKivi service without registering. However, sending observations and rock samples to GTK for analysis requires creating a user account (registration).
