Research scientist in Isotope Geochemistry
The Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) is looking for a Researcher for the Circular Economy Solutions unit to strengthen its expertise in isotope geochemistry. Your workplace will be the Research laboratory in Espoo, but occasional remote work within Finland is also possible.
As a researcher, you will be part of our isotope laboratory’s expert team, working in diverse domestic and international research and client projects. You will independently carry out analytical workflows, handle data, and develop isotope geochemistry methods. In addition, you will be responsible for interpreting and integrating data related to research applications, performing cross-validation, and QA/QC. You will present research findings at conferences, workshops, and client meetings, and publish results in high‑quality peer‑reviewed scientific journals.
In this role, you will have the opportunity to utilize and further develop state‑of‑the‑art analytical capabilities in which GTK has recently invested. This year, GTK’s research laboratory is investing in a femtosecond laser and a new SC‑ICP‑MS instrument. The laboratory already hosts several high‑end analytical instruments, such as a MS/MS MC-ICP-MS, and Time of Flight ICP-MS. GTK’s laboratories also include two nearly metal‑free cleanrooms. Collaboration with the University of Helsinki provides access to a picogram‑level cleanroom and a new TIMS instrument. Our focus on circular economy includes advanced characterization for mineral processing, mineral and material traceability across raw material value chains, and innovative applications for mining waste.
What we expect
- Ph.D. in geology or geochemistry, or in another relevant field
- Previous work experience in relevant tasks
- Knowledge of the principles of isotope geochemistry and geochronology
- Hands-on experience in ICP mass spectrometry and laser ablation technology
- Competence in research project work and/or project management
- Track record of relevant scientific publications
- Excellent written and spoken English
We appreciate
- Experience with the function and maintenance of ICP-MS, TOF, TIMS and laser ablation systems
- Familiarity and capabilities with other geological analytical techniques, such as liquid chromatography and handling of spikes
- Experience in analytical method development and validation
- Knowledge and interest in topics ranging from ore deposits, geochronology, traceability, circular economy and environmental applications using isotopic systems and methodologies
- Experience in data reduction software/coding
- Finnish language skills or interest in learning Finnish
Personal qualities desired from the applicant
You are an adaptable team player, but you also take the initiative and work independently on new and highly innovative projects. You should be passionate about learning new things, work well under pressure, and have good prioritization skills so that you can quickly adapt to changes and seize opportunities as and when they arrive.
