Seismic P-wave velocity

Seismic P-wave velocity measurements in the laboratory reflect the propagation velocity of compressional waves transmitted through the rocks using echo-sounding elements. Measurements are made at room pressure and temperature.

The measurements are typically carried out on drill core samples with maximum length 10 cm and minimum length 4 cm. The sample must contain two parallel smoothed surfaces. Prior to measurements, the samples are saturated in water for 2-10 days.
