Introduction
ENGEO 2026-2027 project implements the goals of the geoenvironment focus area of GTK´s strategy 2024-2027.
The project includes three work packages:
• We study the interaction of geo- and biodiversity, investigate possibilities for producing information for the use of ecological compensation, investigate the significance of the EU legislation, and define the role of GTK in the theme of geo- and biodiversity.
• Strengthening research and innovation capabilities related to the sustainable use of inland waters and their carbon sinks and stocks by producing knowledge, refining datasets, developing methodological expertise, and investing in national and international collaboration opportunities.
• We follow the progress of EU’s Soil Monitoring Law adoption and provide information on the characteristics of Finnish soil to support directive’s national implementation. We research the characteristics of soil and bedrock for construction of infrastructures and in land use planning. Activities are also dedicated to the research of material characteristics and risks associated with clay for building purposes. On the bedrock side, structural geology is exploited in rock construction applications while sustainable utilization of aggregates and natural stones and their circular economy are promoted.
The main goal for all work in the ENGEO 2026-2027 is to enable and strengthen the conditions to co-funded and commercial projects.
