Hydrogen Map – Hydrogen potential of Lappland
- Project research area
- Availability of Critical Raw Materials Energy Transition
- Project duration
- 01.01.2026 - 31.12.2028
Introduction

The aim of the project is to map the geological hydrogen and helium potential of the Lapland region and develop new methods for detection of hydrogen and helium in the surface layers of the bedrock. The project integrates remote sensing, machine learning, and field measurements to create a hydrogen potential map and conduct prospectivity analysis. GTK’s mineral system expertise, which integrates bedrock geology, structural geology, geochemical-, and geophysical interpretation, is now being applied for the first time in hydrogen potential studies.
The project will lead to the development of practical and unified methodologies and a geological hydrogen map, laying the foundation for further research. The Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) is responsible for managing and coordinating the project, as well as for communication and dissemination of research findings to various stakeholders.
