Project duration
01.04.2026 - 31.03.2028

Introduction

The Kivireki project will develop sustainable operating models for the mining and quarrying sector to support the circular economy and the efficient and responsible use of natural resources. The project focuses particularly on the utilization of mining industry waste rock as aggregate products and on ensuring their environmental suitability.

The aim is to produce reliable information on the environmental properties of different aggregate materials, develop risk assessment procedures, and create the conditions for commercializing side streams. At the same time, the project strengthens companies’ capabilities and promotes new business opportunities.

The project supports the development of national legislation and prepares for upcoming EU regulation while advancing Nordic cooperation to establish harmonized environmental requirements and best practices.

The implementation of the project is divided into four main work packages:

Work Package 1: Knowledge Bank
Work Package 2: Risk Assessment Framework
Work Package 3: Collaboration and Export Potential
Work Package 4: Project Management, Communication, and Reporting
