- Project duration
- 01.01.2026 - 31.12.2028
Introduction

The objective of the MERTINET project is to improve the availability, usability, and national coordination of Finnish marine data as part of the European EMODnet marine data network. The project will produce a Finnish Marine Data Roadmap, identifying marine data providers, data flows, databases, and existing connections to EMODnet. Based on the roadmap, operational models and practices will be developed to enable more efficient sharing and use of Finnish marine datasets in accordance with the FAIR principles.
The project will also examine opportunities and constraints related to marine data sharing, taking into account information security and national security considerations. The study will assess in particular how the openness of marine data can be balanced with secure and responsible use. In addition, the project will strengthen Finland’s national collaboration within EMODnet.
Partners: Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) and the Finnish Environment Institute (Syke). In addition, the study on the secure sharing of marine data will, where necessary, consult relevant authorities and stakeholders.
The coordinator of the project: The Geological Survey of Finland (GTK)
Funding authority: European Maritime, Fisheries and Aquaculture Fund (EMFAF)
Project manager / contact person: Susanna Kihlman
