Project duration
15.05.2026 - 30.06.2027

Introduction

The project investigates the current environmental state of the former Sirkka test mine located in Kittilä, Finland, and assesses the potential impacts of the mine and its waste materials on nearby water bodies, particularly the Levi River. The study focuses on characterising waste rock and tailings and evaluating the release and transport of harmful substances into the environment.

The work combines field measurements with laboratory analyses. In addition, new lightweight field analysers are tested and evaluated to improve the efficiency and speed of environmental investigations. The results will enhance understanding of environmental risks in the area and support future land use planning. The project will also generate new scientific knowledge and contribute to the development of monitoring methods for mining environments.
