Introduction

The main objective of the project is to study the potential of the peatlands in the municipality of Ranua and to find new opportunities for the sustainable and diverse use of peatland biomasses (peat, moss, peatland vegetation) in wellness products and services and food.

The aim of the project is to inspire new RDI activities related to peatland biomasses and to the ecosystem services of mires and peatlands, that could enable positive growth in the economy of the Ranua region through new industry.

The project explores the raw material potential of the peats and peatlands in Ranua for use in wellness products and services and in food meant for human and animal consumption. A preliminary report will be drafted in relation to raw materials and their international market situation and potential.

Existing peatland and peat information from multiple sources will be used for drafting the raw materials report. A report on the current situation of peatland biomasses will also be drafted and they will be assessed in relation to the raw material potential in Ranua. A survey on the current situation and potential on the international market will be conducted on raw materials and processed products, and the current related legislation in Finland will be examined to explore opportunities related to wellness products and services and the food industry.

The results of the project will be up-to-date information on the peatland biomass reserve potential in the Ranua region and an assessment of the opportunities for its use for wellness products and services and for food. In addition, the project provides information on the related markets and the development needs of products, processes and services. The competence capital gained from the project is expected to create new opportunities for the research of sustainable use of peatland biomasses and their use in the different industries, which will provide further opportunities for economic growth and diversity in the region.

The project is implemented by the municipality of Ranua and the Geological Survey of Finland.
