Introduction


Large-scale initiatives such as DestinE and environmental Research Infrastructures (RIs) generate vast amounts of high-quality data, but their use remains challenging for many stakeholders due to technical barriers and fragmented tools. PEAT-GENIE addresses these challenges by developing an intuitive decision-support platform that integrates diverse data sources and transforms them into actionable insights.
The project will develop AI-based predictive models that combine machine learning and deep learning methods for impact assessment. Its key innovation is the integration of two Generative AI-powered user interfaces. The first enables users to explore alternative management scenarios through natural-language “what-if” questions, translating stakeholder needs into assessments without requiring technical expertise. The second explains complex AI model outputs in clear, user-tailored narratives adapted to different expertise levels and languages. Together, these interfaces improve access to RI data and support evidence-based decision-making.
PEAT-GENIE focuses on peatlands as a demonstrator due to their importance for climate regulation, biodiversity conservation, and water management. The project will extend Digital Twin components to support applications related to hydrology, greenhouse gas fluxes, biodiversity, and land cover. The platform will be validated at test sites in Denmark, Estonia, Finland, and Ireland, demonstrating its applicability across diverse peatland types and management practices.
While centered on peatland-related datasets and RIs, PEAT-GENIE will develop scalable architecture, data integration methods, Digital Twin components, and Generative AI interfaces that can be adapted to other environmental domains.
The project has 20 partners from 10 European countries.
