Areas of expertise:

I’m a geomicrobiologist with a strong interest in environmental microbiology, microbial functions and ecology, microbe-mineral interactions, and biologically mediated global biogeochemical cycles. My research focuses on groundwater microbiology, microbial ecology, and the role of microorganisms in elemental cycling processes. I am also responsible for microbiological research on acid sulfate soils and soils that naturally contain elevated concentrations of metals. In addition, I supervise doctoral research on the microbiology of iron-manganese concretions in Baltic Sea sediments and on the microbial ecology of groundwater systems in Estonia.
